Mercedes’ struggles under the ongoing ground-effect era have continued during the 2024 season. The team failed to score even a single podium finish during the races that have taken place so far. Hence, the team principal Toto Wolff , and the drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are vocal regarding the disappointing performance of their W15 challenger. Brackley will bring updates to their car before the Miami GP in hopes of potentially amassing some better results.

Mercedes even struggled during the Chinese weekend despite a P2 finish in the Sprint race for Lewis Hamilton. The team was conducting some experiments with the challenger, hence causing the performance to drop substantially. Hamilton was also eliminated from Q1 during the qualifying session. Toto Wolff reckoned that all things considered, Mercedes wasn’t in a good position.

The pace from the W15 wasn’t ‘enough’ during the Shanghai weekend.

I think considering where we put the cars altogether, drivers and team, was not a good position for today. Not good enough overall, Lacking pace. Toto Wolff said, as reported by gpfans.com.

Wolff asserted that Mercedes would be bringing multiple updates to the chassis before the upcoming Miami GP. According to the 52-year-old, Brackley needs to ‘dig deep’ regarding the development of the W15. Additionally, the Austrian raised confidence and positivity over the upcoming upgrades to Mercedes’ car.

We have got to dig deep. We have got something coming for Miami that looks like a good step, let's see where that brings us out. It's not an OK car. We can see what the mistakes are on the car.  Toto Wolff noted.

Toto Wolff admits Lewis Hamilton’s W15 ‘experiments’ were a “step too far”

Mercedes was experimenting with the challenger of both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in Shanghai. The experiments turned out to be disappointing for the latter and hence caused him to fail miserably during the race.

Wolff explained that the team went a bit aggressive regarding the experiments. The 52-year-old accepted that updates to the chassis were a ‘step too far.’

We wanted to go a bit more aggressive to see if it was something so different we needed to do on that car and you can see Lewis today took it on him, that was maybe a step too far." Toto Wolff mentioned.

The Austrian didn’t hesitate to acknowledge that the car wasn’t fast at all. He also pointed towards Hamilton’s comments about the poor performance of the W15 in China. Hence, the entire experiment fiasco was not the right thing to do for the German constructor.

The race car was not fast. You hear him saying the car doesn't turn and this is what we can see in the data. it wasn't the right thing to do. Toto Wolff highlighted.

Keeping everything in view, Mercedes would definitely take a great amount of learning from the Chinese weekend and set them as a benchmark for the coming updates. The team will keep on working over the chassis to help Lewis Hamilton end the season on a high. As things currently are, Brackley could even risk losing out to McLaren down the season, keeping in mind Woking’s positive performance.
